Num Pang's Curry Red Lentil Soup, One of Our 100 Favorite Dishes

No. 58: Curry red lentil soup from Num Pang
While the Num Pang crew made its name on its Cambodian-style sandwiches, the rest of its menu, which seems to expand with each new location--see the bar menu steeped in items like chicken wings and baby back ribs that just rolled out at the NoMad location, for instance--is replete with treats that are far more than obligatory sides (read: afterthoughts). Our favorite is the curry red lentil soup, a deeply complex stew imbued the deep, throaty spice of cumin, steeped in earth, lifted by ginger and the anise-y scent of fennel, and finished with a textured ridge of crispy shallots and pickled cabbage. It's a dish hearty enough to fortify you against the cold of winter, but it eats lightly enough to be a solid summer order, too. We recommend pairing it to a blood orange lemonade.
Later this year, we'll pen our Best of New York issue, our annual love letter to what's great in this town. When that paper hits the streets, you'll find our picks for the very best this city has to offer when it comes to dozens of cuisines, restaurants, dishes, and drinks. Until then, you can get a taste of our contenders as we count down, in no particular order, our 100 favorite dishes from around the boroughs, a list of laudable eats worth tracking down right now.
