Oh My God! Another Secretive Bar!
Yes, you're not imagining things. It's just as you've always dreamed. It's just what you've been waiting for. There's a new speakeasy in town. And it's above 14th Street!
As everyone knows, if it's hard to find a bar, you get a better buzz off the pricey cocktails served within. The new Raines Law Room (48 West 17th Street, between 5th and 6th) has no phones and no clear signage, so you know it's worth it. It's outside is marked by a small plaque (we hope it's very small and also rusted to the point of illegibility) and you must ring a doorbell to be let in. Also, there's no phone. Once inside, there's velvet furniture, booths, erotic Belgian wallpaper, and buzzers for you to summon the waitresses. Also, there are cocktails designed by someone associated with Milk & Honey. And, get this, in the spring there will be seating in an outdoor courtyard. Yeah, take that Milk & Honey.
Chances are, I'm there in the next two weeks--outdoor seating or not--mocking it while happily slurping away on something fancy mixed with tequila, getting the sort of buzz one can only find in an unmarked bar.
