One Mexican Restaurant's Appalling, Racist T-Shirts
Taco Cid, a Mexican restaurant in South Carolina, has been outfitting its employees in T-shirts printed with the phrase "How to catch an illegal immigrant." The words are placed above the kind of crude box trap one might use to catch vermin, with tacos as the bait.
Journalist Corey Hutchins wrote about how the shirts points to larger issues in South Carolina and explained how local teachers and activists first brought attention to the restaurant. In response, Taco Cid has stated it will "no longer support The Free Times with advertisements, as it has done so in the past years."
Taco Cid also posted a longer response on their website heavy on the all-caps, which ignores the fact that the food industry is supported across the country, and at all levels, by immigrant workers. It begins:
Our T-shirts were created as a witty and comical statement regarding ILLEGAL immigrants. There are NO racial nor hate remarks towards any specific ethnic group.
The T-shirts, which aren't witty at all, are, unfortunately, still on sale.
