Opening Soon in the Flatiron: BBQue's Smoke Shack and Ootoya

Two new restaurant openings coming soon to the Flatiron: Signage (and a hiring sign) is up at BBQue's at 668 Sixth Avenue, promising a "smoke shack" and other barbecue specialties. And just a few blocks south, at 8 West 18th, will soon be home to Ootoya, a "world renowned" (at least according to the signage) Japanese casual chain restaurant that has more than 100 branches across Asia and that specializes in set menus with lots of veggies and other nutritious items.

According to an article a few months ago in Crain's, BBQue's is owned by Joseph Cutolo, who runs a catering company in Queens, and will serve dishes like pulled pork sandwiches to burgers stuffed with cheese. Cutolo also hopes that this will be the first of several BBQue's in Manhattan and on Long Island -- wonder what chain Dallas BBQ has to say about that.

And per JTally, this branch of Ootoya will serve dishes like yakitori chicken and handmade soba noodles, as well as alcoholic drinks, though it will most likely begin offering teishoku (the set meals) in 2012 and afterward. The branch is set to open in November, and like BBQue's, it's positioned to be the first of many to come. Guess you could call it a chain reaction.
