Pain au Lait is perhaps more properly thought of as a Viennese pastry, even though it is one of a collection of bread products normally eaten by Parisians for breakfast. With a dough something like a brioche, pain au lait is a species of pain petit, which is a torpedo-shaped dinner (or in this case, breakfast) roll.

The surface of the version at Choice Market has been egg-washed, and giant crystals of sugar added on top to ramp up the breakfast potential. Nothing better with a cup of cafe au lait.

Five-year-old Choice Market is a neighborhood bakery not far from the Pratt campus. In addition to sweet and savory breads and pastries, it also turns out set meals of a rib-sticking sort, which can be consumed at a giant rustic table in the front of the premises.
