Panya's Giant Japanese Breakfast
Normally, a dish with an $8.50 price tag would not qualify for our Incredibly Cheap Eats series. But the Japanese breakfast spread at Panya Bakery is so generous and elaborate that it's a certifiable deal.
The main event is a large broiled fillet of fish -- today, it was crisp-skinned salmon, best eaten with a bit of soy sauce and the toasted nori and pickles that come on the side. Then there's a bowl of miso soup floating with tofu, carrot, and seaweed, plus steamed rice and a green salad doused in that miso-carrot dressing common to Japanese restaurants. Small, cold side dishes of sesame-oiled spinach, shiitake mushrooms, bean sprouts, and a mayo-heavy potato salad contribute their respective veggie charms.
And if that weren't enough, a small bowl of natto, the goopy fermented soybean dish, comes with a tiny raw quail's egg. Mix the two together, each making the other more viscous, and then slurp up the nutty, slightly cheese-like result.
It's such a satisfying and nutritious assembly that it could count as breakfast and lunch.
On an unrelated note, Panya has a new Mexican menu, oddly enough, offering burritos, tacos, and quesadillas.
