Postscript: Les Desirs Patisserie Will Close This Friday
Les Desirs: fade to black.
Last fall, word emerged that Les Desirs Patisserie, a Chelsea stand-by for 48 years, would close to make way for a new branch of Sullivan Street Bakery. Although the plight of the patisserie -- which has long been a gathering place for neighborhood seniors -- earned plenty of local news coverage and many petition signatures, it was ultimately a lost cause. Jeremiah's Vanishing New York brings the news that Les Desirs will close this Friday.
In addition to the new outpost of Sullivan Street (whose owner, Jim Lahey, opened Co. a few storefronts down from Les Desirs last year), Les Desirs' stretch of Ninth Avenue will also witness the imminent expansion of Txikito, which is said to be taking over the old Lotto space next door.
