Red Hook Mercado's Menu Takes Shape

The Red Hook vendors may have just kicked off their new season, but, like just about everyone else these days, they've already turned their thoughts to the promise of an open-air flea market.

Having announced his plans last week to open the Red Hook Mercado on Van Brunt Street, Cesar Fuentes, the Executive Director of the Food Vendors Committee of Red Hook Park, has apparently been busy lining up food vendors: according to the Mercado's website, the Country Boys' Fernando Martinez and Soler Dominicana's Rafael Soler (who'll also be at Summerstage) will be selling their tacos and pupusas, respectively, at the market, which opens May 15.

In addition to other Latin food vendors, Grindhaus will be setting up shop, serving, per the website, "a rotating cast of forthcoming menu items such as Spicy Bitches, a custom blended porky and piquant tubed good, battered up and deep fried." No word on what's become of their plan for a sausage parlor on Van Brunt Street (you can read an amusing account of the owner's travails here), but this seems to be a promising development for neighborhood wiener fans.

Also on the roster: FattyCakes NY, yet another Brooklyn baked good start-up. This one specializes in custom-made cookies like the Movie Theater, a chocolate chip cookie pimped out with buttered popcorn and gummy fish. It's too early, of course, to predict the cookie's popularity, but it seems safe to assume it will go over well with people who think Christina Tosi's compost cookies could have seven or eight more ingredients crammed into them.
