Reminder: Buttermilk Channel's $30 Prix Fixe Is Still a Screamin' Deal
Buttermilk Channel

Buttermilk Channel (524 Court Street, Brooklyn; 718-852-8490) is an excellent place to be when it's dark, cold, and rainy -- the Carroll Gardens restaurant glows warmly, and pulsates with chatter and buzz from parties huddled close together at tightly packed tables. Charming any night of the week, it's especially nice on Monday nights, when a $30 prix fixe offering packs the house.

This isn't exactly news -- the Monday night menu has been a Buttermilk Channel tradition since the restaurant opened in 2008 (price has increased, just slightly, over the years), and the meal has been such a popular event, Doug Crowell and Ryan Angulo imported it to French Louie, the Boerum Hill spot they opened early this year.

But we stopped by last Monday and were reminded just how good of a deal this dinner is -- you choose an appetizer, entree, and dessert from a selection culled straight from the regular menu, which includes some of the restaurant's most popular (and best) dishes. You can get the creamy cauliflower and leek soup, for instance, followed by the golden fried chicken with cheddar waffles, then finish with a pecan pie sundae. That combo on a regular night, by the way, would set you back $44.

We also sampled the hake, which is worth considering if you've had the fried chicken before -- the silken fish comes perfumed with orange-fennel broth over a bed of rainbow chard.

Dishes are amply portioned, and the wine list also features reasonably priced selections for pairing.

So if you're thinking about a date night, or just want an excuse not to cook at home this evening, consider this your call to action and go make a reservation.
