Restaurant Girl No Longer on the Menu
The city's ranks of payrolled restaurant critics just got a little smaller: the Post reports that Danyelle Freeman, the Daily News' Restaurant Girl, has been 86'd. Freeman's sacking follows that of New York's Gael Greene and the Observer's Moira Hodgson. Though her credentials and shamelessly self-promoted visibility were controversial (her prior experience was as a blogger), Freeman's firing has been taken as further evidence of the slash-and-burn cost-cutting endemic to most newspapers these days. Reportedly, she has no replacement, and will return to writing reviews for her Restaurant Girl blog.
The Voice's own restaurant critic, Robert Sietsema, said in a prepared statement, "I'm sad to see her go. She started out wobbly but gained momentum, and became a voice we expected to see every week. I wish her the best of luck, and will keep up with her on her blog."
