Rippers Sets Sail in Today's Village Voice
During the dog days of summer, Scarlett Lindeman heads out to Rockaway Beach, where she finds a surf shack aspiring to be much more than a surf shack. She says:
Like the Peach Pit, The Max, and Cheers, the perfect hangout spot with good friends, the right soundtrack, and decent chow may be as fictional as the places we've created in our collective cultural imagination. Rippers, a burger shack on the boardwalk at Rockaway Beach, aspires to be that kind of chimerical destination: a spot whose vibe is all hoots, high-fives, and the occasional beer bong.
That goal seems loftier when you consider the fact that Rippers was wrecked by Hurricane Sandy. The storm tore it apart completely, forcing the owners to rebuild entirely if they wanted to re-open for this season.
But rebuild they did, and surfers, sun-tanners, and neighbors line up daily for burgers and beer.
So how is the food? Find out when you read the rest of Scarlett Lindeman's story on the post-Sandy Rippers in today's Village Voice.
