Robert Sietsema at Strong Place; Sarah DiGregorio at Gourmet Sweets & Restaurant
This week in the Voice, Robert Sietsema reckons that Strong Place "might be the most perfect evocation of the Brooklyn bistro to date." Sarah DiGregorio finds that the food at Gourmet Sweets and Restaurant "is a testament to all the many wonderful things one can make with humble cuts of meat, lentils and rice, and plenty of spice."
Sam Sifton is rather taken with Vandaag: "The bar is an excellent place to start a meal that walks in step with this design, that is both simplicity and elegance combined... the menu proves to be just as inventive." [NY Times]
Ryan Sutton is thoroughly unimpressed with two Mediterraneans: La Mangeoire ("The [bouillabaisse] stung of so much Pernod we would've failed sobriety tests. It wasn't pleasant") and Plein Sud ("I ate there so you don't have to"). [Bloomberg]
Adam Platt finds hits and misses at Nuela, which "seems to have been designed both as an ambitious gourmet destination and as a scene restaurant, although what that scene might be, at this early date, is not entirely clear." [NY Magazine]
Jay Cheshes is disappointed in a decidedly Laurent Tourondel-less BLT Burger & Bar: "a clone-ready restaurant... a personality-free zone, and an embarrassment to the man whose initials still adorn the marquee." [TONY]
Tables for Two files on the Plaza Food Hall: "The something-for-everyone ethos hardly lends itself to great flights of fancy, but the execution provides far more pleasant surprises than ugly ones." [New Yorker]
