Ruby's Will Close After 76 Years on the Coney Island Boardwalk
Ruby's Bar & Grill
Another day, another big step for homogeneity: Ruby's Bar & Grill, which has sat on the Coney Island boardwalk since 1934, will close in two weeks. Gothamist reports that the bar is being pushed out by Zamperla, the management company responsible for turning Astroland into Luna Park. Reportedly, Ruby's is being closed to make way for some sort of sports bar that will doubtless conform to Zamperla's achingly bland vision for the waterfront.
The only closure mentioned on the Ruby's website is the bar's seasonal closure, which happened yesterday. And the accompanying announcement that the bar will reopen on January 11 for the annual Polar Bear Swim suggests that its owners didn't see this coming: "Thanks for a great season friends and we will see you soon......."
