Saying Hasta Luego to LeNell
A smattering of the city's bartenders, brand ambassadors, and other members of the spirits world bid LeNell Smothers, owner of the now shuttered eponymous liquor store in Red Hook, farewell last night at a party held at newish cocktail lounge Ward III. The going away party doubled as a fundraiser for the fledgling New York City chapter of LUPEC (Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails). Smothers announced her departure from the city for the sun and sands of Mexico in July -- unwittingly so, as she was videotaped without her consent revealing her plans and the video posted online. Last night, however, she was all smiles as friends and colleagues dropped by the bar to wish her well, and the ladies of LUPEC passed out goodie bags that matched Smothers' floor-length animal-print dress. If you missed the party, you can always say adios to LeNell this Friday at Astor Center, at yet another going away party that will double as a christening of Astor's newest event space.
