South African Female Winemaker Dinner at Madiba
Madiba (195 DeKalb Avenue, Brooklyn), Fort Greene's fabled South African restaurant, along with Gnarly Vines Wines & Spirits (350 Myrtle Avenue, Brooklyn), is hosting a South African Female Winemaker Dinner on Wednesday, March 11. Mark Henegan, who grew up in South Africa and owns the restaurant along with his wife Jenny, remembers when some of the first black winemakers came over from South Africa before the end of the apartheid. Now, he says, "South Africa is really at the forefront of minority winemakers," with people of different races, genders, abilities, and disabilities all making wines, not just in fancy wineries but even in their garages.
For the dinner, Vivian Kleynhans from Seven Sisters winery and Malmsey Rangaka from M'hudi, will be there with their wines, which will be paired with with a five-course dinner. The cost is $75 and reservations must be made in advance by calling 718.855.9190. The menu and the wine pairings are after the jump.
