South Street Seaport Beer Garden May Be Dead in the Water
Well, so much for that. It looks like Pier Garten, the German beer garden that was supposed to replace South Street Seaport's Water Taxi Beach, may not actually materialize, thanks to the efforts of Community Board 1.
DNAinfo reports that the garden's operator, Telly Hatzigeorgiu, withdrew his liquor-license application for the space at Pier 17 after the board placed too many restrictions upon him. CB1 wanted the outdoor space to close by 3 a.m. seven days a week and stop playing music at midnight on weeknights and 1 a.m. on the weekends, rules that Hatzigeorgiu said would prevent him from turning a profit on the space.
CB1's chairman said that he and other residents were concerned that late-night festivities would disturb the community -- contrary to popular belief, there actually seems to be one outside of the Seaport mall.
