Tacos Mexico's Chorizo Taco: One of Our 100 Favorite Dishes of 2013

No. 62: Chorizo taco from Tacos Mexico

Street vendors are an inextricable part of New York City food culture; the tradition of eating from a roadside stand, rooted in hot dog vendors and gyro carts, blossomed into today's trendy food truck boom. One of our favorite local street eats purveyors is the Tacos Mexico lonchera, a truck that parks nightly on West Fourth Street and Grove. Inside, meats sizzle on a flat top while the owners assemble burritos, quesadillas, and tortas. But the real stars, as the name suggests, are the tacos, which come piled with griddled meats. We're partial to the chorizo variety, a piquant chopped sausage that drools juice into its corn tortilla. It's topped with crisp iceberg lettuce, cilantro, and biting onions, and we always say yes to hot sauce and guacamole, the latter of which is really more like a refreshing avocado-tinged salsa.

Later this year, we'll pen our Best of New York issue, our annual love letter to what's great in this town. When that paper hits the streets, you'll find our picks for the very best this city has to offer when it comes to dozens of cuisines, restaurants, dishes, and drinks. Until then, you can get a taste of our contenders as we count down, in no particular order, our 100 favorite dishes from around the boroughs, a list of laudable eats worth tracking down right now.
