Taqueria Shutters Its Lower East Side Location, Reopens on St. Marks This Week
Laura Shunk, the Village Voice

A number of restaurants in the building on the corner of Houston and Orchard have shuttered over the last few months (prior victims include Bereket and Philly's Cheese Steak) as the new landlord prepares to raze the building and erect something new in its place. The latest casualty is Taqueria (198 Orchard Street), which has been slinging Los Angeles–style tacos to this neighborhood for the last four years. It closed its doors last night, and plans to reopen in the East Village later this week.

Taqueria, an offshoot of a Jersey City restaurant, amassed a stable of neighborhood regulars during its run here, thanks to its cheap fare, solid margaritas, and excellent tacos. For our money, it makes some of the best carnitas in town. Many of those regulars stopped by for closing night last night; the walls of the restaurant were mostly stripped of the Southern California–themed paraphernalia that characterized the place.

Staffers told us that the new location, at 79 St. Marks Place, will open on Thursday, and it has one major bonus: size. The Lower East Side address was roughly the size of a hallway, and frequently commanded waits of more than an hour. The new place has two floors.

Look for the same lineup of tacos, tortas, and platters, plus margaritas and Mexican beer.
