Tavern on the Green Workers Rally in Opposition to Contract Demands
What a week for legal action! David Bouley's being sued by his landlord, waiters are suing the owners of Japonais and Masa, Pink Elephant's owners are being accused of mismanagement and fraud, and now, today, Crain's reports that hundreds of union workers at Tavern on the Green are rallying this afternoon in opposition to the new owner's proposed reductions in wages, overtime, vacation time, and benefits. Although an official of the Hotel Trades Council argued that workers "could see their health care plan eviscerated, wages slashed, and in some cases, jobs taken away from them," a lawyer for Tavern owner Dean Poll said it ain't his problem: "That Tavern never renegotiated or sought concessions so they could stay in business was their problem, but it's not going to become the problem of the new ownership."
