The 2nd Annual Cheesemonger Invitational Will Be a Curd Nerd Fantasia
Vegetarians despairing of the massive meat consumption that will in part define the month of July, take heart: July will also offer one whole evening to ingest as much cheese as the human digestive system can bear.
That opportunity comes courtesy of the Second Annual Cheesemonger Invitational, which takes place on July 8. Billing itself as the "ultimate party for cheese lovers and the lovers of cheese," the event is one part curd-nerd fantasia and one part stone-cold competition.
The latter will feature cheesemongers from 40 cheese shops from around the country (and one from Australia) who will compete through four rounds -- tasting, cutting and wrapping, plating, and pairing -- for a $10,000 purse that will be split between the top 10 finalists.
Attendees will also bear witness to Cheese-O-Mania, a sort of ultimate cheese battle that the organizers are describing as "like the Olympics meets Fight Club for cheese." And they will also get to consume untold amounts of curds in the form of a cheese-based, all-you-can-eat smorgasbord created by Tia Keenan, the talented chef-fromager known for her innovative, unconventional pairings and equally unique methods of presenting them; the lady once served cheese from a 15-foot feed trough. Presumably, there will be plates here; certainly, there will be beer from the folks at Sixpoint Craft Ales.
Tickets are $25 and can be found here; the invitational itself will be found at Larkin Cold Storage in Long Island City.
