The Dead Celebrity Cookbook at MXYPLYZYK, Gift Suggestion #14
The cookbook displayed in the window of MXYPLYZYK, against a backdrop of hamburger greeting cards and Ritz boxes.
Help the Goth, Vamp, or just plain cynic on your list have a very morbid Christmas by picking up a copy of The Dead Celebrity Cookbook by radio personality and raconteur Frank DeCaro. (Check out Lauren Shockey's interview with the author.)
It may surprise you, but celebrities going back 100 years and longer have been mad foodies, and many of them could cook up a storm. Accordingly, there have been a succession of celebrity cookbooks published starting in the 1950s, and this is just the latest in a long succession.
The difference is, these celebrities are all dead. Paging through the cookbook in the crazy West Village store MXYPLYZYK (please don't ask me how to pronounce it) I saw many recipes that I'd like to try myself, including:
Liberace's Sticky Buns Andy Warhol's Ghoulish Goulash Klaus Nomi's Key Lime Tart Vincent Price's Pepper Steak Johnny Cash's Old Iron Pot Family-Style Chili Sonny Bono's Spaghetti with Fresh Tomato Sauce Bea Arthur's Good Morning Mushroom Tomato Toast
And good Christmas morning to you, Bea Arthur!
