Toast the New Season of 'Mad Men' With a Sneaky '60s Cocktail

Don Draper fans can barely keep their girdles on in anticipation of the new season of AMC's Mad Men, premiering this Sunday. If you're planning a viewing party (or you just want to play the 1960s ad man), make this tasty twist on a vodka martini, a popular cocktail of the time. It's made with Smirnoff, a brand that, for better or for worse, helped launch the vodka craze of that time.

"Vodka specifically came into fashion during this era," says Lynnette Marrero, founder of Drinks at 6, a cocktail consultancy and catering company. (The name references 1961's Breakfast at Tiffany's, in which Audrey Hepburn invites George Peppard over for what he thinks are intimate drinks but turns out to be a huge party.) "They called it the 'breathless spirit,' meaning if you had a few at a wet lunch it would not smell on your breath... Wink."

The Breathless Martini 2 oz Smirnoff vodka 1 oz Bianco vermouth 1/4 oz Yellow Chartreuse (rinse) grapefruit twist

In a shaker or mixing glass, combine the vodka, vermouth, and Yellow Chartreuse with ice. Stir vigorously using a 1950s vintage martini stirrer, then strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a grapefruit twist.
