Today's Vegetarian Delight: The Pickle Plate at Mile End
Pickles may piss some people off (because they're so freakin' hip these days), but we still find the briny bite of preserved produce absolutely delightful. To wit: the picture-perfect Pickle Plate at Mile End.
For $6, you get a shareable portion of pickles, house-jarred to varying degrees of vinegariness. There are the gently dilled cucumber slices, snappy and pleasantly sour spears, sharply acidic bell peppers, crunchy pickled fennel, and plump preserved mushrooms. There's just enough green on the plate to make you feel better about that smoked meat poutine you ordered, the acidity of the pickles balancing out the fat from the fries, cheese, and gravy like it's what they were preserved to do.
