Village Prime Brings an Uptown-Style Steakhouse to the West Village

While several restaurateurs have spent the last few years attempting to bring a downtown vibe to neighborhoods in northern Manhattan, the people behind newly opened Village Prime (302 Bleecker Street) are reversing the formula: proprietor Paul Singh and his partners noticed there was no classic, uptown-style steakhouse in the West Village, and so they decided to build one.

"We really felt like we should open something on Bleecker," says Singh. "The Village was missing a steakhouse in the neighborhood." He and his partners have been in the hospitality business for decades; among other ventures, they also own Aged Restaurant and Bar, a steakhouse in Forest Hills. Prime, Singh promises, "is a little more upscale" than the Queens restaurant, with a classic steakhouse menu served in a dining room, where wooden walls are bedecked with cowhide above leather banquettes.

As for the steaks, executive chef Rory O'Farrell is putting out a wide range of cuts; Singh says the bone-in strip, ribeye, and dry-aged porterhouse for two, four, or six are particularly excellent. Seafood aficionados will find selections like Chilean sea bass, swordfish, and diver scallops. You can supplement your main with raw bar selections -- or spring for the seafood tower -- and starters like lobster bisque, a wedge salad, and Maryland crab cakes, as well as sides like potato gratin, caramelized onions, and lobster mac and cheese.

You should probably pair your meal to a red wine; Village Prime's list is heavy on regions noted for their wines that pair well with steak. Finish with something from the restaurant's single malt collection, which is currently 30 deep. The bar is also pouring craft beer, much of it local, and cocktails.

Village Prime opened on January 26, and is open for dinner, lunch, and brunch. In addition to happy hour, which runs from 4 to 7 p.m., the restaurant offers a two-course lunch special starting at $14.
