What Jeff Smith and Morgan Wilson Have in Common: They're Pervy
Long before the days of Giada and Rachael, an unlikely hero on PBS taught people how to cook. The man was Jeff Smith, otherwise known as the Frugal Gourmet. His show was highly educational and his recipes quite good (his guacamole was a staple of my youth). But there was a dark side to the thrifty cook, too: In 1997, eight men filed suit against Smith for fondling, kissing, and/or raping them when they were teenagers. Chow poses the question: "Is it now finally OK to like Smith, or were his actions simply too reprehensible?" It's a particularly timely question now that Top Chef: Just Desserts contestant Morgan Wilson was indicted on second-degree felony child pornography charges.
Wilson was arrested on December 7, 2010, after undercover investigators claim they received several file transfers from Wilson using a peer-to-peer file-sharing service. The files contained images and videos of kids in sexual acts. When police raided Wilson's home, he admitted that he had viewed the images and videos. Wilson, whose court date is set for the day after tomorrow, now faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
