What's Happening This Week: A Mexican Soup Tasting; a Sandwich Cookie Class

Sabores Autenticos de Mexico: Authentic Mexican Soups Mesa Coyocan Thursday, August 5, 5:30 p.m. At this three-course soup cooking class and tasting, there will definitely be soup for you. Chef Ivan Garcia will prepare a Pueblan chicken soup with roasted poblano peppers, corn, mushrooms, and queso fresco; as well as a traditional Mexican tortilla soup, and beef soup from southern Mexico City with carrots, chayote, cabbage, avocado, corn, and chipotle. The cost is $40, or $30 if you register before August 4.

The Art of the Sandwich Cookie Whole Foods Bowery Thursday, August 5, 6:30 p.m. Oreo dunkers, unite. Dessert blogger Aaron Hamburger is leading a $45 demonstration and hands-on cooking class on sandwich cookies. Learn how to make a homemade version of the original sandwich cookie and a butterscotch-chip oatmeal sandwich cookie with vanilla ice cream filling, as well as peanut butter and lemon cream varieties.

Summer Suppers James Through Labor Day, 5:30-7 p.m. Until the end of the summer, the couple-owned Prospect Heights restaurant will offer a $30 three-course early-bird menu, nightly. Chef Bryan Calvert's Summer Supper menu changes each week, with dishes like chilled corn chowder with tempura rock shrimp and jalapeno oil, and sautéed monkfish cheeks with heirloom beans and tomato broth.
