Where to Celebrate National Pie Day

Salty honey pie from Four & Twenty Blackbirds

Yes, we understand that the national holidays are mostly just a marketing ploy, but after we're inundated with thousands of emails about things like pie, it's all we can do to keep ourselves from stalking the streets with a crazy look in our eyes, placated only when we sit down with a slice. We think you should share in our mania. Besides, pie is delicious, regardless of what day it is. Here are five spots to celebrate in NYC -- plus a couple of bonus ways to get in on the action.

Where to Celebrate National Pie Day

Four & Twenty Blackbirds, 439 Third Avenue, Brooklyn, 718-499-2917 Our favorite pie shop in the city, this Gowanus pie shop works a seasonal menu, which dabbles in flavors like salted caramel apple, birch beer float, and chili chocolate. Stop by for a slice, or order your own whole pie by phoning the shop.

The Baking Bean

The Baking Bean, Speaking of ordering, we've been blown away by the treats coming out of the kitchen at the Baking Bean, a dessert delivery service helmed by Clarice Lam. Order a large pie or individual pie-lettes in flavors like banana and butterscotch or maple pear and cranberry.

Momofuku Milk Bar

Momofuku Milk Bar, multiple locations If ever there were an occasion to wholeheartedly justify eating a decadent slice of crack pie, today is it. Use the excuse to sink your teeth into this goo-filled oat crust. We're pretty sure it's made of butter, sugar, and unicorn tears.

Pies 'n' Thighs

Pies 'n' Thighs, 166 South Fourth Street, Brooklyn, 347-529-6090 Looking for a classic? Our favorite spot for things like apple, chocolate peanut butter, and pecan is this Williamsburg temple of fried chicken and, well, pie. We're particularly partial to the Nilla wafer-topped banana cream.

Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies via Facebook

Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies, 185 Van Dyke Street, Brooklyn, 718-858-5333 If it's key lime you're after, there's only one place in the city that really does it right, and that's Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies in Red Hook. Head on out to the wholesale bakery sometime between now and sunset to get your hands on a whole pie. It's almost as good as going to Florida, no?

Bonus: Pie milkshake, Hill Country Chicken, 1123 Broadway, 212-257-6446 Okay, so the weather is still polar vortex-ish, which means ice cream is likely the last thing on your mind. We'd still consider traipsing over to Hill Country Chicken for a pie milkshake. Have the staff dump a mini pie of your choice (we like the fruit varieties) into the shake machine and enjoy your liquefied pie a la mode.

Extra bonus: Bake one yourself. Did we mention how much we like the Four and Twenty Blackbirds Pie Book? No? Well, we do, and they were nice enough to provide us with a recipe awhile back. We've also long been a fan of Deb Perelman's Smitten Kitchen pies.

Oh, and if you're more of a savory pie kind of person, we covered that yesterday.
