Where to Find Vegetarian Chicken and Waffles in NYC
The Veggielante is on a mission to spread the word about places to order good, meatless grub. Check out this week's pick.
Destination: Sweet Chick (164 Bedford Avenue; 347-725-4793)
Neighborhood: Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Cuisine: American cuisine with a Southern accent
Overview: Sweet Chick embraces American cuisine but with a Southern twist. This is evidenced in every corner of the restaurant's menu, from the staple chicken and waffles, to the cocktail menu and desserts. But while a poultry haven seems like a bad place for a vegetarian to be, Sweet Chick's covered the meat-free eaters with a vegetarian chicken and waffles.
Highlights: Vegetarian chicken and waffles is a rare sight indeed -- we're not sure we know another place in the city that serves it (if you do, by all means, let us know in the comments). Better yet, the Sweet Chick version ($16) will fool you: If you didn't know you were gazing upon a vegetarian dish, then you probably wouldn't know it's meat-free until you tried it.
Once you do try it, though, you'll note that the "chicken" is not evocative of actual chicken, which is a good thing for vegetarians who dislike the texture of meat. It's made of seitan, a wheat-gluten protein, which is marinated in buttermilk and fried, just like the actual chicken here. And while it's neither gluten-free nor vegan, it does have the same savory flavor characteristic of poultry, which pairs well with the sweetness of the waffles, powdered sugar, and syrup.
Not feeling fake meat? At dinner, Sweet Chick also serves a mac and cheese dish ($8) made with gruyere, fontina, aged white cheddar, and a ritz cracker crust, and a vegetarian meatloaf ($22) garnished with mashed potatoes and sauteed spinach, and topped with an onion and mushroom gravy.
