Will Sky Foods Be the Asian Eataly?
Just as Manhattan had no dearth of Italian specialty shops before Eataly came along, Flushing doesn't suffer a lack of Asian markets. But that's not stopping a 34,000-square-foot Asian "mega-grocery" from opening there later this month.
On July 23, Sky Foods will open its doors in the Sky View Center, the similarly big-ass mall on College Point Boulevard. According to press materials, it will sell both Asian and American products, "at least a quarter of which will be organic," and feature "the largest fresh seafood department in the area." There will also be hot foods, sushi, an in-store butcher, and "other international cuisine."
Of course, the neighborhood recently became home to the New World Mall, which is located a very short distance away on Main Street near Roosevelt Avenue. The mall houses an immense Chinese grocery store, so expect comparisons to abound. Will Sky Foods also offer pork snort? Stay tuned.
