You Can Sign a Petition to Support Max Fish

The NYPD has succeeded where Ulli Rimkus's landlord failed: On Friday night, it shut down Max Fish.

As The Lo-Down reported, the cops shut the bar on Friday night for alleged underage drinking and operating after hours. It was the latest blow for the bar, which has stood at 178 Ludlow Street since 1989 and nearly closed in January due to a rent dispute with its landlord. Although owner Rimkus negotiated with her landlord to stay open for another year, the bar has reportedly been suffering financial difficulties that will only be exacerbated by the cost of hiring extra security to keep out minors.

Max Fish's ever-loyal customers are rallying to save it: They've created a petition to show "support for the continued existence of a vibrant and positive establishment -- one that embodies the creative spirit of the LES and elevates the quality of life for the community." So far, they've accrued 739 signatures, and many comments. "The place is an institution," reads one. "Its disappearance would be the death knell for all things good, original, creative and vibrant in the neighborhood." Hopefully the cops will agree (unlikely, but again, one can hope), even if the landlord doesn't.
