Fashion Week: The Outsiders

At left, watching guests enter, is Anthony, wearing sneakers with wings and a medallion proclaiming POW! He was hoping to see the Korean pop star CL, who is one of Jeremy Scott's muses. At Milk Studios on West 15th Street in Chelsea.

Who owns fashion, anyway? It's not Mercedes Benz. During Fashion Week, the shows are a swirl of celebrities, heat-seeking baby bloggers, and petro-oligarch princesses. But on the sidewalks, behind the barricades, and in the open-air plaza at Lincoln Center, there's a much grittier scene that somehow says more about real New York style. A crush of fashion kids, tourists, design students, hangers-on, and groupies hang around the edges, hoping to get noticed. "We want to perform, too," said Romy, a designer visiting from Amsterdam who staged a "guerrilla fashion show," left, at Lincoln Center. "So we did it ourselves!"
