June 11, 2013 marked the opening night of In Scena! Italian Theater Festival New York, the unofficial second Italian theater festival in New York City (one in 1996 that was held at Hunter College for several weeks with few performances). Organized by Laura Caparrotti and Donatella Codonesu, In Scena! featured nine performances in English, Italian and Calabrian dialect. Vincent Piazza and Anthony Laciura, both from the HBO show Boardwalk Empire, were among the actors who performed readings and plays. The festival was an official part of the 2013 Year of Italian Culture in America, with support from the Consulate General of Italy in New York. Performances were split between the DiCapo Opera Theater and Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimo at NYU in Manhattan, as well as the Belmont Library in the Bronx, the Secret Theater in Queens, and several others. The festival concluded after 10 days with a tribute to the Italian playwright Mario Fratti, who has published over 90 plays that have been produced in over 600 theaters around the world.
