The Dance Parade Cuts Loose

If you were passing through Tompkins Square Park on Saturday, you risked getting ticketed -- for not dancing. Dance Parade Inc., a nonprofit that honors dance from all cultures and time periods, hosted its eighth annual Dance Parade, a celebration of joyous physical self-expression in the park, and the Dance Police were on patrol to ensure everyone is cutting loose. The parade (think everything from hula drumming to samba to techno) made its way from 21st and Broadway, and once it reached the park, participants and spectators adopted any style they liked, with a choice of four stages: one for performance, one family-friendly, one for teaching, and a free dance area. Dance instructors offer free lessons to the shy and uncoordinated. -- By Alanna Schubach
