Stranger by the Lake
Though its structure is simple -- Alain Guiraudie's film unfolds over 10 consecutive summer days, its action confined to the lake and the nearby grove where sex is sought -- Stranger abounds with precision and detail, evinced not just in the spectacular visual composition but also in the observation of behavioral codes in carnally charged spaces.
We get a first look at Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac at Sundance, learn about a new Jean-Claude Van Damme movie that recalls the action movies of yore, age gracefully with Gloria, immerse ourselves with Arctic cowboys in Finnish Lapland, and ponder a murder in a gay paradise: It's the Voice's week in film, which includes reviews of every single movie that's coming out this weekend in New York.
