A Visual Tour of Kiryas Joel

by Amanda Dingyuan Hou | Tuesday, November 11, 2014

Kiryas Joel is a Hasidic Jewish village 50 miles north of New York City. It has the highest poverty rate in America for a municipality with over 10,000 people. Most families have eight to ten children. The median age in Kiryas Joel is 13, the lowest age of any place in the country. We drove up to KJ and spent a day there, talking to the residents and getting an inside look into the insular, mysterious community.
