New York's Magic Mike Does Card Tricks in a Donut Shop
"You meet people from all strata of life," says "Magic" Mike Stephens, a charming magician you might have seen around the West Village, either at Donut Pub (203 West 14th Street) or La Rosetta (243 West 14th Street). "Once you start doing magic, when you change nickels into dimes...I was hooked."According to his website, he's a retired FDNY member who's also available to teach magic tricks. Mike caught the attention of fledging production company Magnalux Pictures one night while the three-man crew was at Donut Pub."He approached us and charmed us," says Dominick Nero, director of Magic at the Donut Pub. "He just started performing magic and we were so intrigued by this guy. He did magic for us for free and offered to teach us the tricks for his own enjoyment. I asked, 'how much is this going to cost' and he just responded with some goofy answer and never asked for money." The crew says its next short-form profile subject will be a a group of jazz musicians.
