A HARSH LAND

When W.B. Yeats spoke of arising and going to Innisfree, it sounded a rather nice place: full of honeybees, crickets, and lapping waters. But the Irish town is a much nastier locale in Enda Walsh’s new play. Having delivered hits at St. Ann’s Warehouse such as The New Electric Ballroom and The Walworth Farce, Walsh returns to Brooklyn again with Misterman, a tale of Thomas Magill, played by Cillian Murphy, he of the piercing eyes and scalpel-sharp cheekbones. Thomas, an evangelical loner, sets off on the day of the community dance to enlighten his uninterested neighbors and the occasional dog. He meets with mockery, abuse, and howling. As in his earlier plays, writer-director Walsh offers a picture of a blighted Ireland and the stories its inhabitants tell and retell themselves in order to survive there.
