A NOVEL IDEA
What's Jonathan Franzen's trick to writing funny? What was Haruki Murakami's job before becoming a novelist? What’s Toni Morrison's writing routine? The answers to all those questions and more can be found in John Freeman's How to Read a Novelist, a compilation of his best interviews from 2000 to 2013, including Jeffrey Eugenides, Doris Lessing, and Dave Eggers. Freeman has been in the literary business a long time. Besides being a freelance journalist, he's been president of the National Book Critics Circle and, until only recently, the editor of Granta. Tonight, the tables are turned, as he's interviewed by Jennifer Egan, one of the subjects in his book. (For Egan fans, she'll also be at 192 Books on November 12 to interview artist Sarah Sze.)
