A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
Dir. Elia Kazan (1945). Kazan made his directorial debut in films with this adaptation of Betty Smith's best-selling novel about tenement life in Williamsburg early in the 20th century. It's mushy and episodic. It depicts poverty, Hollywood stylesanitized. Still, the performancesPeggy Ann Garner, a moving worried child, James Dunn, her drunkard dad, Joan Blondell, her lovable floozy auntare highly impressive.
