A WEEKEND SONNET
With more than 200 poets from over 50 poetry organizations scheduled to attend, the New York Poetry Festival takes place alongside the iconic brick buildings of Governors Island’s Colonel Row. Now in its third year, the weekend-long event features noted poets like Lara Glenum, Cornelius Eady, and Dorothea Lasky, as well as amateur performances from poets hailing from around the five boroughs. Hosted by the Poetry Society of New York, the festival is also part craft fair and part street food exhibition: Attendees can sip on beer in a beer garden sponsored by Brooklyn Brewery, eat a variety of local cuisine, browse handmade items in the Vendor’s Village, see poetry-inspired art installations, and take the little ones to the Children’s Festival to enjoy family-friendly poems and activities. From 11 to 5 (also on Saturday), Governors Island, take the ferry from the Battery Maritime Building.
