Alice in Chains
Besides Nirvana, the best songwriters of the grunge age were Alice in Chains; their mixing of metal and melancholy melodies with Beatles-esque harmonies proved to be a potent combination, and those songs ("Would," "Rooster," "Them Bones") have aged really, really well. They suffered a long exile due to lead-singer Layne Staley's drug addiction and subsequent death, but the new comeback album, Black Gives Way To Bluefeaturing new vocalist William Duvall and a guest performance from Elton John!?still holds the fire.
