ALL THE RIGHT MOVES
Lovers of ballet, tango, tap, hip-hop, and everything in between should set their sights on the Fall for Dance Festival at the New York City Center. Over a period of 10 days, 28 companies from around the world will show off their most distinguished and edgy moves in an array of breathtaking performances. Tonight, the dancers of Shen Wei Dance Arts form geometric maps in the choreographers latest piece, aptly titled Map. The Pichet Klunchun Dance Company from Thailand makes its New York debut with the world premiere of Chui Chai, which explores the theme of transformation from one identity to another. Also on the program is Keigwin + Companys Fire, an insouciant act of movement theater that takes you through lifes emotional, psychological, and physical extremes; its one of four sections of the evening-length work elements (Earth, Water, and Air being the other three). Finally, on a solemn note, the National Ballet of Canada offers a tribute to all those young soldiers killed in war in Soldiers Mass, a 1980 piece by Jirí Kylián, set to music written at the start of World War II by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu.
Sept. 17-27, 8 p.m., 2008
