Dir. Gábor Bódy (1975). Set in the final days of the American Civil War, this Hungarian experimental feature is a succession of unexplained battle sequences and off-handed absurditiesthe original footage refilmed to give it a Matthew Brady texture. The notion of an exhumed 1865 document is a bit arch, but American Torso offers a powerful spectacle of rational activity carried out against a dangerously chaotic backdropeverything undercut by the unstable quality of the medium itself.
