ANALOG POP

Is it no longer hackneyed to compare every slightly leftist rock outfit to the Shins? Guess that ship has sailed for good (thanks for nothing, Portman), but for old times’ sake: Tapes ’n Tapes share their appealing intelligence with meandering pop melodies, with a song structure that takes several sideroad forays from AABA and a singer, Josh Grier, whose warble is reedy and expressive, even when he’s giggling in seeming imitation of a horse whinny (see “One in the World,” off this month’s excellent third album, Outside). Two-bit electro effects are employed to cheeky effects without fuzzing out their sincerity. These Minneapolis gents just might be timeless. With Oberhofer and Xylos.
