Aruan Ortiz

School taught Ortiz about Schoenberg, the bandstand taught him about Bud, and last month, at the Jazz Standard, Wallace Roney gave him enough room to blend the two. The Cuban pianist is a young marvel, messing with ordinary swing, playing footsy with unique harmonic ideas, and making a point to give the music a hot step. He and his team, which boasts Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, should have a demonstrative attitude—the leader likes things to boil over.
