At Midnight, I'll Take Your Soul
Dir. Jose Mojica Marins (1964). Brazilian director Marins made a slew of striking low-budget fright flicks shot during the 1960s and 70s in a studio he organized in an abandoned synagogue in Sao Paulo. In most of them he also plays the leading role, a demented character called Coffin Joe, who terrorizes the inhabitants of provincial small towns. His movies are more than a bit nasty and crudely made, but are noteworthy for their lively imagery inspired by Brazilian folklore.
