Dubbed "Chicks on Speed," the Gotham Girls are a flat-track roller derby league founded in 2003 and now composed of seven teams, including the Queens of Pain and, our own personal favorite, the Wall Street Traitors. Members are allowed to adopt their own "skater names" (and outlandish styles to go with them). Their website explains that "every Gotham Girl is an amalgam of athlete, pin-up girl, rocker, and brute rolled into one bad-ass derby girl," but there are rules, and the league is even a legitimate not-for-profit organization. Tonight, watch as the Bronx Gridlock take on the Manhattan Mayhem, then head over to Manitoba's (99 Avenue B) for the after-party. See them now before Drew Barrymore's derby flick Whip It (due out in October) brings this underground sport to the mainstream.
