Babes in Toyland
(Gus Meins and Charles Rogers, 1934). In this charming Laurel and Hardy fantasy, peopled with nursery-rhyme characters and based on Victor Herbert's operetta, the boys work in a toy factory and come to the aid of innocent Bo-Peep to save her from the clutches of the lecherous miser Barnaby. In his screen debut, Henry Brandon (who would later gain fame as Scar, the Indian chief in John Ford's The Searchers), makes a superb villain.
