Mavado has been a Hot 97 mainstay this summer, showing up unannounced at Drake’s Jones Beach extravaganza one month (to sing “So Special”) and performing “Survivor” at DJ Angie Martinez’s Queens barbecue the next. But tonight, he cedes the stage to two legends: Headliner Mr. Vegas, who started making smashes in 1998—the year tracks like “Nike Air” rocked the dancehalls and “Heads High” crossed over to the U.S. r&b charts—still sounds as fresh as ever. Beenie Man, meanwhile, goes back even further—but don’t tell that to the DJ who was spinning “I’m Drinking/Rum and Red Bull” at the party I went to last weekend or the kids who were singing it outside my apartment the next morning. With Alison Hinds, Baby Cham, Konshens, and Chris Martin
