BATTLE TO THE BONE
In the studio, Battles doesn’t downplay their dependence on any number of gizmos and gadgets—it’s one reason why the Brooklyn math-rock trio recruited Gary Numan to sing a song called “My Machines” on this year’s Gloss Drop. As a live band, though, Battles is a proudly real-time proposition, hitting drums, picking strings, and tapping keys with a superhuman precision that’s only increased since the departure last year of ex-frontman Tyondai Braxton. Fortunately, the group’s show is only partly about flexing that technique; it’s mostly dedicated to getting on the good foot. Expect an extra dose of revelry at this hometown gig, the final stop on their U.S. tour.
